The route of the bus to the Inca Town

The Incas called it Patallacta ("High City")

Now it's known as Machu Picchu ("Old Mountain" in Quechua)

In the background: Huayna Picchu ("Young Mountain")

The official year of the discovery of Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham is 1911, but the oldest map of the Inca town is from 1873, drawn by Hermann Göhring, printed in 1877. This map shows the Quechua name "Patallacta", which means "High City".
